Doomsday December 21, 2012: Is this the end of the world as we know it ?
How many times does someone pick a date and say “This is the date the world is going to end?” Then everyone believes them and freaks out. I know I did when I first heard that the end of the world was near. People who believe the world is going to end because of the Mayan calendar really have no clue what they are talking about. The Mayan calendar never says December 21, 2012 marks the end of the world. However, it does say that December 21, 2012 ends the count b’ak’tun cycle of the Mayan calendar.
The b’ak’tun cycle of the Mayan calendar has been going on since August 11, 3114 B.C., which stands for before Christ. When a cycle of the Mayan calendar ends, it is a cause for a celebration for the Mayan people, and is the start of a new era. Since the Mayan people were really great scientists, it has been said that they predicted the end of the world by having to longest cycle of their calendar end on December 21, 2012. But I think that just because the cycle ends doesn’t mean the world is going to, because the fact is that there is more than one cycle in the Mayan calendar.
Sure, there is talk about earthquakes ending the world and exteme temperates either hot or cold killing everybody. But the truth is that no one knows when the world is going to end, it could end tomorrow or five minutes from now- no one knows. According to the Bible, Matthew 25:36 says that “no one will know about that day or hour, not even the Angles in Heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” Because of this I believe that not even scientist will be able to determine the exact date the world will end. If I remember right, someone said the world was supposed to end January 1, 2000, which it obviously did not.
There are more important things to be worried about like what is happening right now. We need too focus more on the present and not so much on the future. Is worrying about the end of the world really helpful? If what they say is true then there is really no way we can stop it althought when it happens i don’t believe that it will be a bad thing. I personally don’t want to waste my time worrying about what may or may not happen. Focusing to much on the world ending could change our whole society for the worse. Would people stop using morals and feel like they can go do whatever they want because the end of the world is near? People never stop to think ‘hey, if I do such and such how is it going to affect me and the others around me?’ know people make mistakes and do things that they regret and wish they could take back, but publicizing that the world is going to end makes everyone think its more accepctable to do this, that or the other.
